  • Will the Theatrical Version of Wolverine Include New Footage?

Once the workprint for X-Men Origins: Wolverine was leaked onto the Internet, Fox Studio chairman Tom Rothman quickly mentioned that the theatrical version would be "10 minutes" longer and would see the inclusion of "key scenes." However, according to IMDB and MovieTickets.Com, the movie's running time is 107 minutes, and apparently, FilmThreat reports that the leaked version is also 107 minutes. That's a whopping change of 0 minutes!

AICN confirmed the lack of new footage with this report:

Well, having seen the finished film, the mystery is solved: theworkprint version IS in fact identical to the release print, sanseffect and some audio work. It's obvious that FOX is trying theirdarndest to keep this news from getting out, because it will eliminatemost of the motivation for people who have seen the workprint to payfor a ticket.

A "Fox source" refutes the similar running times, explaining to Movieline that the theatrical version was edited down 10 minutes from the workprint and then an additional 10 minutes of footage was added leading to the exact same running time. What a coincidental 10 minutes! The "Fox source" remained unnamed in the story.

  • Director Says New Harry Potter Is "Sex, Potions, and Rock 'n' Roll"

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood PrinceThe last couple of trailers for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince have been (nearly) all about the darkness. Responsibility weighs heavy on the Harry's shoulders, as the chosen one faces off with a rising tide of evil.

There is another side to the Half-Blood Prince though, and this more playful and romantic dimension is one that director David Yates highlights in an interview with Sci Fi Wire. The movie is, he quips, "actually about sex, potions, and rock 'n' roll." It is about "a wonderfully fun, slightly rebellious, quite naughty stage of teenage life." While the last film left off at the first kiss, Yates says:

This film is a bit more sexualized than that. You know, in a way. We don't see sex, but it's kind of in there. And the relationships are a bit more complicated and romantic and convoluted. So we're pushing into new emotional and kind of physical territory for Harry Potter.

Is he worried that fans might not be ready to see this more grown-up side of Harry Potter? Yates doesn't think so, suggesting that part of what is so interesting about the series is that the characters do grow older and change. The fans have been growing up with Harry Potter, and he expects that one of the things they are looking forward to is seeing how the characters develop.

  • Anton Yelchin Talks Trek and Terminator

Identified by the Los Angeles Times as one of the stars to watch this summer, 20-year-old Anton Yelchin has landed plumb roles in two of the most-anticipated fanboy flicks of the season. He plays freedom fighter Kyle Reese in Terminator Salvation and Pavel Chekov in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot.

Inglourious BasterdsReacting to his new-found fame in an interview with the Times, Yelchin says he got "really lucky," and emphasizes his sense of responsibility in "capturing what people appreciate about the characters." But in both cases he is taking on the characters at an earlier stage in their lives than audiences have been seen before. This gives him a certain amount of creative latitude. "There are different paths to the same person," he observes.

As an actual Russian -- he's from what used to be known as Leningrad -- he approaches playing Trek's Chekov with a certain sense of irony:

With Chekov, it was fun to capture the comedic aspects.... Naturally, he's kind of funny sometimes. I adjusted it, but I wanted to be close to the [original version]. Certain things I took: the V's to the W's. He says wessels. He doesn't say the V, which is an odd choice. It's the kind of choice that they made 40 years ago when he was this Cold War stereotype. But it's fine. It's great.

For his role as a younger incarnation of Michael Biehn's rage-filled Kyle Reese, Yelchin says he drew on some fellow middle-class San Fernando Valley residents: observing how they overreact when they're younger, before they gain self-control -- leadership, vulnerability, and anger all mixed up together.

The paparazzi aren't beating down Yelchin's door, yet. But after the pair of blockbuster role out this May, they may well be.

  • ReelzChannel Opens Doors in Albuquerque

Nearly 100 people piled into a pristine soundstage to welcome Reelzchannel to its new home in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Secret's Out's Leonard Maltin hosted the festivities and introduced New Mexico Lieutenant Governor Diane Dennis, Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez, and Reelzchannel CEO Stan Hubbard. In speaking about the opportunities Albuquerque provides Maltin said, "There is no ceiling to what can be done here."

Since the announcement was made back in January that ReelzChannel was moving from Los Angeles to New Mexico, there has been non-stop action to get the facility at Albuquerque Studios ready for business. During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Hubbard noted that it was "not easy" to make the move happen. He had nothing but praise for all ReelzChannel employees -- both past and present -- for what it took to make this a reality. Hubbard said those who are not moving with the company to its new home "handed [the network] off with pride" to the new staff in Albuquerque. He said he has confidence that they will build on all of network's previous success.

Maltin also noted the success of ReelzChannel -- in the nearly three years it has been on the air, he is consistently approached by growing numbers of people who are aware the network. "More people are catching on that we're there," he said.

In addition to Maltin, other ReelzChannel talent were at the event. Tory Shulman (Movie Mob) was on hand to give tours of the new facility while Gerrad Hall, Naibe Reynoso, Jill Simonian, Jeremy Parsons, and Travis Oscarson were available to talk with the invited guests.

Oscarson (First Fans) could only say "amazing" when asked about the new studio facility. Parsons (The Big Tease) perhaps summed up the whole experience best when he said, "I am excited about what Albuquerque holds."

  • Eli Roth Gets into the Vengeance in Inglourious Basterds

Inglourious BasterdsA Jewish filmmaker with a serious taste for the horror genre, Eli Roth has his first major role in Inglourious Basterds -- and he does it with gusto, wielding a bloody baseball bat. The movie is basically a Jewish revenge fantasy with an Apache twist, Roth explains in an interview with MTV.

He plays Donnie Donowitz, a Red Sox fan whose plan is to "take a baseball bat and get all the Jews in the neighborhood to sign it, and then ... beat every Nazi to death with it." Originally he expected to be the littlest basterd, but instead, Roth says,

[Director Quentin Tarantino] basically cast my Hebrew school class. I looked around, and I was like, 'These are the kids who were in my bunk at Camp Cedar Lake.' It's them going on a killing spree -- and that's what makes it so much fun.

Roth goes on to explain how Basterds takes inspiration from the Apaches:

He's not going to skimp on the scalping, let me tell you. Quentin based what the Basterds do on what the Apache Indians did. They would do what's known now as the Apache Resistance, where they would capture people and horribly mutilate them, scalp them, torture them, cut them up, and leave one person alive. Then, [the survivor] would go back to the cavalry and describe what happened.

As the leader of the Basterds, Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) drives this angle home with his orders to bring home hair and his nickname "Aldo the Apache."

  • Charlie Hunnam Screen Tests for Thor

    Thor

Thor, the mythological Norse god of thunder and one of the founding members of Marvel Comics' super-team, the Avengers, is expected to be one of the most complex -- and commercially risky -- comic-to-film adaptations in Marvel's planned lead-up to the Avengers feature film.

The intended release date for the film has already been pushed back, and there have been no shortage of cast rumors -- from Josh Hartnett or Natalie Portman portraying the evil trickster god Loki, to Alexander SkarsgÄrd lifting the hammer in the Thor role -- but recently one more name has been added to the list: Charlie Hunnam of the FX series Sons of Anarchy. At the recent premiere of Mutant Chronicles, Hunnam was asked about the Thor rumor and he admitted that he had been called in for the role.

Superhero films were once thought of as cheap, "popcorn flicks," but with films such as Iron Man (2008) and The Dark Knight (2008) scoring record box office numbers while simultaneously courting Oscar buzz, the genre has come out of the shadows and into the Hollywood spotlight.

Still, the prospect of playing a larger-than-life character in spandex (or leather, armor, etc.) can be a daunting decision for any actor. About his film choices, Hunnam has said:

Well, I have a great deal of pride, and I care infinitely about what my peers think (of me). It could be my downfall, but I don't think it is -- Hollywood is run on perception, and if you stray off the path of what you want to do with your career, it's suicide. I have 60 years to make the money, but the choices I make in the next five years are really going to define my career.

Hunnam has appeared in Cold Mountain (2003), Green Street Hooligans (2005), and Children of Men (2006). He currently stars as Jackson "Jax" Teller on the FX series Sons of Anarchy.

Next Showing: Thor is currently scheduled for a May 20, 2011 release

Online Police Ad Seeks More Victims of 'Craigslist Killer'

Thursday, April 23, 2009

Boston authorities are hoping that an ad they placed on Craigslist will lead them to information on other potential victims of the "Craigslist Killer," who chose his targets using the popular classifieds Web site.

"Were you attacked or robbed at a Boston-area hotel after placing an ad on Craigslist?" the police ad asks. "If so, you may have information that could aid the investigation."

Prosecutors are building a case against Philip Markoff, a 23-year old medical student who is charged with killing a masseuse, Julissa Brisman, 26, of New York City at the Boston Marriott Copley Place hotel on April 14. He also is charged in the robbery of a woman at another Boston hotel four days earlier.

He has pleaded not guilty to the murder, armed robbery and kidnapping charges.

Brisman, who had advertised her erotic massage services on Craigslist, was found dead in a hotel doorway after she'd been shot three times and bashed in the head. Police believe she was killed after trying to fight her attacker.

Jake Wark, a spokesman for Suffolk County prosecutors, said Boston police placed their ad in the "erotic services" section of Craigslist. He said police hope the ad will persuade any other women who may have been victims of Markoff to come forward.

The posting does not mention Markoff by name, and Wark said investigators are not sure there are other alleged victims.

Brisman's underwear was allegedly found in Markoff's Boston-area apartment and a gun was stuffed into a hollowed-out "Gray's Anatomy" textbook, according to media reports.

The Boston Herald reported Markoff hoarded the underwear of two of his victims — Brisman and a 29-year-old Las Vegas woman who survived the armed robbery. Police haven't publicly confirmed the discovery of the underwear, and Markoff hasn't been accused of sexually assaulting either victim.

Meanwhile, a college friend of Markoff's told the New York Daily News that she once had a scary encounter with the accused attacker after a night out drinking. The two were walking back to their dorms on campus after a fraternity party.

"He pushed me up against the wall and tried kissing me," Morgan Houston, who was in the same pre-med program as Markoff at SUNY Albany, told the News.

She said she protested, but was frightened because her study partner was trying to overpower her. Luckily, another male friend who was walking by yanked Markoff away from Houston, the News reported.

A law enforcement official, speaking to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case, said Markoff had been placed on suicide watch at the Boston jail he is being held. Multiple media outlets reported what appeared to be shoelace marks were found on his neck.

Markoff's supporters have taken to Facebook to rally around him.

A new Facebook group called "Phil Markoff is Innocent Until Proven Guilty" describes itself as a forum to counteract the media and a culture "that has forgotten that people like Phil are suspects, not killers."

Investigators in the case are looking into gambling as the possible motive for the attacks. The law enforcement official said Markoff was a "frequent visitor" to Foxwoods casino in Connecticut.

Foxwoods Resort Casino, in Mashantucket, Conn., has confirmed it is cooperating with authorities investigating Markoff's gambling habits.

Markoff was arrested on Monday on Interstate 95 in Massachusetts as he and his fiancee drove to Foxwoods.

Defense attorney John Salsberg has said Markoff isn't guilty of the charges and "has his family's support."

Markoff's fiancee, Megan McAllister, insists police have the wrong man.

McAllister, who earlier this week told ABC News in an e-mail that Markoff could not hurt a fly, is still standing behind him, her father, James McAllister, told reporters Thursday.

"She's still confident in Phil. Other than that, we're saying a lot of prayers," he said outside his home in Little Silver, N.J.

Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley said he believes Markoff's original motive was robbery, but he ended up killing Brisman when she fought back.

The first woman Markoff is accused of robbing said she thinks she's alive because she didn't resist.

"I just complied with everything he wanted me to do and I didn't resist him in any way, and I think that's why," she said in an interview with Boston television station WCVB.

Prosecutors have not released her name.

She said she had identified Markoff from the surveillance photos police distributed. He was wearing the same clothing and she recognized his face, she told the station.

Markoff also is suspected in an attempted robbery in Warwick, R.I., of a woman who had posted a Craigslist ad as a stripper.

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal on Wednesday called on Craigslist to stop what he calls "pimping and prostitution in plain sight."

But Craigslist's CEO, Jim Buckmaster, said criminals who use the site are virtually guaranteed to get caught because they leave electronic trails that are easily traced.

PLEASE HOLD UNTIL ARRIVAL (1/21/09)

Dear Mr. President,

As a follow-up to my previous letter, I would like to offer you a few good ideas free of charge, Mr. President, for changing our country. This is no squid pro squid, so here goes:

1. Since Oprah raised the bar by giving everyone in her audience a new car, how about bailing out GM, Ford and Chrysler, only if they give every American family a new hybrid car? Including illegal aliens. Why alienate them further?

2. I understand it costs our government $40,000 a year to house, feed, guard and rehabilitate each of the 2.2 million people in prison. Then give them seven days in which to be adopted by an American family or be put to sleep. The money saved would eliminate our trillions in debt and provide the empty prisons for housing the homeless, soon to be in the millions.

3. Abolish income taxes. Instead, the entire family weighs in on or before April 15th and pays $5 a pound for each member of the family, including pets, and other occupants. The aggregate total from 300 million people would exceed an income tax total. This method also diminishes the obesity problem, except for the filthy rich.

4. Take Congress off salary and put them on straight commission.

5. Place truth serum in the Senate drinking fountain and install a mental detector in both houses of Congress.

6. Require all doctors to publish their medical school grade averages in the telephone book. An A+ doctor could certainly be trusted for brain surgery.

7. SAT tests should be given to all members of the Electoral College.

8. Allow guns in homes but decrease the velocity of bullets by 98%.

9. Charge $5,000 for a marriage license and $5 for a no-fault divorce.

10. Same sex marriages would become legal nationally and hermaphrodites should be allowed to vote twice.

Thank you for your consideration of my ideas, Mr. President. I ran for President myself in 1964 and 1968, losing both elections by a landslide. You can read all about it in my book, The President I Almost Was.

Sincerely, Mrs. Yetta Bronstein
